Introducción sobre La Torre de El Cairo
Si nos preguntamos cuál es el monumento contemporáneo más destacado de los últimos 100 años, la respuesta seguramente será la Torre de El Cairo.

Ubicación Geográfica
La Torre de El Cairo está ubicada en el barrio residencial de Zamalek, en la Isla Gezira, entre El Cairo oriental y El Cairo occidental, es decir Guiza.
Cerca del centro de la ciudad y del Museo Egipcio, la Torre de El Cairo se puede alcanzar en taxi o metro, desde la Estación Ópera, ya que está ubicada muy cerca de la Casa de la Ópera de El Cairo, otro monumento contemporáneo maravilloso.
El Constructor
La Torre de El Cairo fue construida por Gamal Abdel Nasser, el ex presidente egipcio. Él fue el segundo presidente egipcio y el líder de la Revolución del 23 de Julio de 1952, que derrocó al rey Faruk, el último rey egipcio.
Sus más grandes logros fueron la nacionalización del Canal de Suez y la construcción de la Gran Represa de Asuán.
Nasser fue promovió el Nacionalismo Árabe e intentó unir a todos los países árabes hasta su muerte en 1970, después de que el ejército egipcio perdiera la guerra con Israel en 1967.
Historia
La Torre de El Cairo fue construida entre los años 1957 y 1961. Fue diseñada por el arquitecto Na’oum Shabib y más de 500 trabajadores participaron en su construcción. El costo de esta obre fue estimado en 6 millones de dólares. Se realizó con el dinero que Estados Unidos le entregó al gobierno egipcio para obtener su favor en el conflicto del proceso de independencia de Argelia.
Sin embargo, Gamal Abdel Nasser rechazó utilizar este dinero en la infraestructura de Egipto, aunque el país lo necesitaba y decidió construir la torre. Por esto la estructura tuvo diversos sobrenombres a lo largo de su historia, como: “el tenedor de Roosevelt”, “el gran ejemplo” y “no”.
La Torre de El Cairo fue renovada y reabierta al público en 2009. La reparación y el proceso de reforma costaron más de 35 millones de libras egipcias, pero fue vital para mantener la torre en las mejores condiciones.
Descripción
La Torre de El Cairo está construida en concreto y tiene el diseño distintivo de la planta del loto, una de las más importantes para los antiguos egipcios. Tiene 187 metros de alto y consiste de 16 pisos construidos sobre una base fuerte hecha de granito importado de Asuán; el mismo granito que los faraones utilizaban para construir los templos y tumbas.
Una vez en su terraza, los visitantes pueden disfrutar de las vistas panorámicas de El Cairo y distinguir algunos de los puntos de referencia más importantes, como la Ciudadela de Saladino, el edificio de la Televisión Egipcia, la Isla de Zamalek, el río Nilo, el área de El Azhar, etc.

La Torre de El Cairo tuvo el honor de recibir a personajes internacionales, como Katherine Hepburn. El más reciente fue el presidente ruso Putin, quien cenó en la torre durante su paso por Egipto.
La torre está abierta al público desde las 8:00hs hasta las 00.00hs en invierno y desde las 09:00hs hasta la 01:00h en verano.

This was why the Tower had many nicknames including the fork of Roosevelt and the largest embodying of the word no in the history of mankind.
This building was renewed and renovated in a period of two years from 2006 until 2008 by the Egyptian Company called the Arab Contractors. The reparation and reforming process had the cost of more than fifteen million pounds but it was extremely vital to keep the tower in its best condition.
