About the White and the Black Desert

The land of the Nile has all what it takes to make a tourist happy during his holiday in Egypt. Not only the most astonishing ancient monuments, the finest beaches, but also some natural amazing phenomenon that can only be found in Egypt.

During the past few years, the Egyptian Western Desert has been visited and explored like any other period in modern history. Among the most important and popular attraction in the Western Desert of Egypt is certainly The White Desert. This is besides the Black Desert situated nearby.

The Geographical Location of the White and the Black Desert

The White Desert is situated in the middle of the Western Desert of Egypt only 45 kilometers to the north of the Governorate of El Wadi El Gedid or the New Valley.

The Black Desert is located a dozen of kilometers to the north of the Bahariya Oasis. This is the reason why many of the travelers who wish to explore the wonders of the White and the Black Deserts of Egypt usually stay in a hotel in Bahariya. The White Desert is actually located in the paved road that leads from links the Farafra Oasis with the Bahariya Oasis. The Black Desert is located slightly to the North of the White Desert.

The guests would visit the desert in the morning and then spend the night in one of the hotel of the oasis. Moreover, they can also some quality time camping in the desert with BBQ in the evening and some other interesting activities.

The area of the White and the Black Deserts in Egypt is situated around 450 kilometers to the South West of Cairo, about 800 kilometers to the South of Sharm El Sheikh, and about 400 kilometers to the West of Hurghada.

The History and the Formation of the White and the Black Desert

The White Desert took its name from these astonishing Phantasmagoric pinnacles that seem like bright white different types of animals, bizarre shapes, mushrooms, and different kinds of numerous shapes that form a landscape that is hardly found anywhere else in the whole globe.

In fact the rocks of the White Desert were made out of chalk that was deposited in the shallow sea that used to exist in that area in ancient times. This was roughly more than one million years in the past.

This chalk mainly consists of a huge quantity of numerous microorganisms and some tiny microscopic singular celled algae and some calcium carbonate cells that were formed at the bottom of this ancient sea.

The travelers spending their vacation in Egypt can easily view the seashells and the fossils inside the rocks of the white desert.

When the water of the sea withdrew away from the location of the sea during what was called the Tertiary Period, the rocks were actually shaped by the wind of the Western Desert in Egypt.

The wind had a notable considerable strong effect in shaping the rocks. This was due to the existence of the much stronger yellow sandstones that belong to what was named the Nubian formation in the area.

There were also the effects of some other natural elements like the different seasons of weather and the rainfall in the area that contributed to the emergence of these weird looking formation of white rocks.

It is common as well to find in these  rock formations some iron disulfide; something that has the same elements as pyrite.

The Black Desert on the other side was formed due to the presence of some small black rocks all over the area. There are also some volcano mountains. The Black desert offers its guests with amazing views and natural portraits of these black-colored small rocks.

The White and the Black Desert

The White Desert is certainly the most popular attraction in the Western Desert of Egypt. The area has welcomed numerous tourists spending their vacation in Egypt in the past few years. In fact in 2002, the area of the White Desert has been declared as a natural protected area to preserve the charm and the beauty of the area.

Today numerous travelers spending their tours in Egypt commonly visit the White and Black Desert of Egypt.  The atmosphere and the climate in the area of the White Desert are considered to be perfect for relaxation and recovery from different diseases.

The White and the Black Desert area is also a popular destination for camping and spending marvelous times. This is besides the fact that there are no dangerous animals or any wild creatures in the White Desert of Egypt.

The North Eastern section of the White Desert in Egypt is known to the locals and some of the tourists visiting the Western Desert as part of their holidays in Egypt as the section of Aqabat; which means in Arabic; the passage of obstacles and hardships.

In the middle of this section of Aqabat, there is the twin peak, a high mountain that is one of the most important landmarks of the White Desert. Moreover, situated nearby there is the historical area of Um El Ubayyid; which dates back to the prehistoric period in Egypt.

Among the most important landmarks of the White Desert in Egypt is that huge 20 meters high mountain that can be seen from far away and it is called the chisel. Some Bedouins, due to the shape of the rocks, call this mountain the hands of god.

The most important landmark of the Black Desert on the other hand, putting into consideration that it is much smaller than the White Desert, is the Gebel El Engleeze, or the Mountain of the English; as this was the location where the British troops resided during World War I
