Madrid

After breakfast, you will enjoy a city tour including: a visit to the Casa de la Villa. The old town hall and former prison of Madrid is situated in the charmingly historic Plaza de la Villa. Although the government left the building in 2007, visitors can pop in to take a tour of the many rooms decorated with 17th-century frescoes, including work by Goya. Next to Casa de la Villa (and connected by an arched passageway) in the Plaza de la Villa is this 16th-century palace that was restored at the beginning of the 20th century. Take a look inside the Tapestry Room, which contains an impressive collection of textile art. Also you will discover the Jardines del Buen Retiro. At the edge of the city center, the 350-acre Jardines del Buen Retiro is the largest park in the city of Madirid. Once owned by the Spanish Monarchy, today it is a public park filled with sculptures, monuments and a peaceful lake. You will also visit Madrid’s Royal Palace which is the official residence of the King of Spain, though it’s only used for state ceremonies today. A handful of the palace’s 2,800 rooms are open to the public. Visitors can view the Royal Armory and artwork by masters such as Caravaggio, Veláquez and Goya. Don’t miss the well-manicured gardens. Visiting the Plaza Mayor is a must. This famous plaza in the heart of Madrid stood outside the city wall during medieval times. The square has seen a long list of public spectacles over the years, including burning of heretics, bullfights, and festivals. Numerous cafes and restaurants line the square today, with street performers adding to the lively scene. Another remarkable place to visit is Puerta de Alcalá Gate. Important Italian architect Francesco Sabatini designed this granite neoclassical gateway in 1774, and the monument marked the eastern edge of the city until the mid-1800s. Angels and cupids hover over the gateway’s five arches. (Meals: breakfast)

Madrid

Day free at leisure, where you can visit the Museo Nacional del Prado. A one-time Spanish Royal art collection is now recognized as one of the world’s finest collections of European art. The Spanish Masters collection is a must-see including Las Meninas by Diego Velázquez and works by Goya, El Greco and Murillo. Another interesting visit could be the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. Catalan architect Oriol Bohigas called this sprawling modern art museum “the ugliest building in Spain,” but inside is a world-class collection with emphasis on 20th-century Spanish artists including Dalí, Miró, and Picasso, and also including the work of other international artists.
